So, what is a resilient organisation? And why is the concept important?

Resilient organisations adapt to a changing environment, organically and dynamically. They are seldom caught wrong-footed by changes in markets, technologies, regulations - and even social norms and buying fashions. Because everyone is a player in the business of sensing incoming signals pointing to the need to change, and able to react to them, the organisation is very fleet of foot.

• Resilient organisations continue to prosper and grow, when market conditions are adverse, and when competitors stumble.

• Resilient organisations in the public sector take changing political landscapes in their stride, as they do changes to regulations and inspection regimes.

• Because staff engagement operates at high levels, staff problems are few.

• Customers stay loyal, as their changing needs are accommodated without strain, often through collaborative relationships.

It is widely accepted that in a turbulent world, strategy needs to be emergent. Resilient organisations are living emergence - but that does not come about unless the development of greater resilience is a fundamental part of management strategy.

The Research Project Offer

We are delighted to announce a 2010 organisational resilience research project. It will establish a database that can be used by participants to benchmark themselves against norms of organisational resilience.

• If you would like to be able to assess the current state of your organisation - for free! - then our new research project is for you.
• If you would like to be able to identify, from your organisation’s resilience profile key management actions that would increase its resilience, then that is included - also for free.
• Participating organisations will get a free report outlining their current state of resilience, including charts indicating areas of management action needed.
